Chihuahua - Yankee - Small - Adult - Female - Dog
8/21/13: YANKEE WAS SPAYED AND THOROUGHLY VETTED TODAY! UNFORTUNATELY, SHE TESTED POSITIVE FOR HEARTWORMS. ALTHOUGH WE NEVER LIKE TO HEAR THAT, IT IS MANAGEABLE AND TREATABLE. WE HAVE STARTED HER ON IVERMECTIN (MONTHLY MICROFILARICIDE). YANKEE'S NEW OWNER WILL HAVE TO CONTINUE THIS TREATMENT (OR MAY OPT TO DO FULL TREATMENT IF AVAILABLE). IVERMECTIN MONTHLY IS NO DIFFERENT THEN GIVING HER A MONTHLY HEARTWORM PILL (AND YOU MAY OPT TO USE INTERCEPTOR OR HEARTGUARD ALSO) BUT BECAUSE SHE IS POSITIVE IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT SHE GETS HER MONTHLY DOSE. THE VET ALSO BELIEVES THAT YANKEE IS A YOUNG DOG SO SHE HAS MANY GREAT YEARS TO GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO GIVES HER PROPER CARE AND LOTS OF LOVE! 8/20/13:YANKEE IS MAKING RAPID PROGRESS NOW THAT WE HAVE DECIDED TO MOVE HER INTO THE HOUSE AND GIVE HER EXTRA SPECIAL CARE AND ATTENTION. WE FEEL THAT SHE WILL BE READY TO JOIN HER NEW HOME VERY SOON. HER IDEAL NEW HOME AND FAMILY WILL BE QUIET AND UNDERSTANDING. THEY WILL BE WILLING TO WORK WITH HER AND EARN HER TRUST. ALTHOUGH STILL TIMID, SHE IS NOW ALLOWING US TO HANDLE HER WITHOUT TRYING TO BOLT AND SEEMS TO CRAVE THAT ATTENTION. WE HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT SHE EXPERIENCED A HORRIFIC AND TRAUMATIZING EVENT WHEN SHE FELL INTO THE CANAL SO IT WILL TAKE HER TIME TO LEARN TO TRUST AGAIN AND BE THE BEST DOG SHE CAN BE...SHE IS WELL ON HER WAY NOW THOUGH:) 6/20/13: YANKEE IS STILL A SCARED PUP...WE CONTINUE TO WORK WITH HER BUT PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT SHE STILL DOES NOT TRUST PEOPLE. IT MAY BE AWHILE BEFORE WE CAN MAKE THAT CONNECTION. IF INTERESTED IN ADOPTING HER, YOU MUST BE WILLING TO CONTINUE TO WORK WITH HER AND KNOW THAT IT WILL TAKE MUCH PATIENCE AND TIME TO BOND AND GAIN THIS GIRL'S TRUST! SHE DEFINITELY HAS POTENTIAL TO BE A GREAT COMPANION ONCE WE CAN GET HER TO STOP RUNNING FROM US! Yankee is a brindle purebred chihuahua. She has the most beautiful coat and the most unique I have ever seen on a chihuahua! We are unsure of her age but we believe her to be an adult-maybe around 5-6 years of age. Her angels searched for her family but have been unsuccessful so she is now looking for a new home. Her story is heartbreaking...she was pulled from a canal after nearly going under and drowning. Her guardian angels at first thought that she was an otter floating in the water but as they approached, they could see her fighting to keep her head above water and realized it was a little dog! She was terrified but did not attempt to bite or growl...she was just happy to be out of that canal! She is still a bit timid so she would probably do best in a quiet home. She does not seem to like large, rambunctious dogs (as her rescuer's had a 2 year old spunky lab)but she would probably do fine with calm, well behaved dogs who are over the heavy play stage! We do not think she would do well with small children only because she is pretty tense and may snap if spooked. This could change and may just be the result of her harrowing ordeal. Once she feels safe and secure, she may well loosen up but that remains to be seen. For now, we recommend no small children and preferably a quiet home. She would do well with an older person who just wants a lap buddy. Yankee's adoption fee is $200 and will cover her spay, vetting and ensure that she gets a loving home. If interested in adopting Yankee, please fill out our adoption application and e-mail your interest.* WE HAVE MARKED YANKEE AS SPECIAL NEEDS DUE TO HER HEARTWORM STATUS-HOWEVER, SHE DOES NOT REALLY REQUIRE ANY SPECIAL CARE.
